Why Your Social Media Posts Look Blurry (And How to Fix It)

xcropimage.io Team

Find out why your Instagram and Facebook posts appear blurry and what you can do to get sharp, clear images every time.

Why Do My Posts Look Blurry?

Blurry or soft images on social media usually come from resolution, compression, or scaling issues—not from the platform alone. Once you know the cause, you can fix it before uploading. Here are the main reasons and simple fixes.

1. Resolution Too Low

If your image has fewer pixels than the platform displays, the app or website will scale it up. Upscaling makes the image look soft or pixelated.

What to do: Export at least at the platform’s recommended size. For example, Instagram feed looks best at 1080px on the shortest side. Use an image resizer to set the exact dimensions before you post.

2. Heavy Compression

Platforms compress uploads to save bandwidth. If your file is already heavily compressed or in a weak format, the result looks muddy or blocky.

What to do: Start from a high-quality file. Export as JPG at 80–85% quality or use WebP for a better balance of size and quality. You can convert and optimize images before uploading so the platform has a good source to work with.

3. Wrong Aspect Ratio or Cropping

When the aspect ratio doesn’t match the feed, the platform crops or squeezes the image. That can soften details or cut off important parts.

What to do: Crop to the correct ratio before uploading (e.g. 1:1, 4:5, or 9:16 for stories). Use an image cropper to frame the shot and avoid surprise cropping.

4. Screenshot or Re-upload

Screenshots and re-downloaded posts are often downscaled and re-compressed. Each “save and repost” cycle reduces quality.

What to do: Always post from the original file. Keep a folder of final images at full size and use those for uploads.

5. Editing in a Too-Small Canvas

Editing at 500px or 800px and then expecting it to look sharp at 1080px will disappoint. You can’t add real detail by enlarging later.

What to do: Edit at full resolution (or at least at the platform’s display size). Resize only to meet the platform’s max dimensions, not below them.

Quick Checklist Before Posting

  • Shortest side is at least 1080px for feed (or the platform’s recommended size).
  • Saved as JPG 80–85% or WebP, not over-compressed.
  • Cropped to the right aspect ratio for the post type.
  • Uploading the original export, not a screenshot or re-download.

Using the right image dimensions and a bit of prep will keep your posts sharp and professional.
